I've been Fukuoka 5 times. Most of them are short trips, but enough to enjoy the days in Fukuoka.
I usually use the Ferry to get there, I'll let you know what I took.
1.KOBEE : Jet ferry.
It takes 3.5 hours to get there. And the cheapest way to buy the ticket, Use Social commercial or tourbaksa. In my experience, Both sell the cheapest ticket.

2.Camellia : Cruise.
It takes a day it arrives early morning but you have to wait until the Japanese immigration office opens. When it opens you can enter Japan. But this cruise has some facilities like a public bathroom that has a bathtub you can take a bath watching the sea. And it has a mini Arcade, Smoking room. Also, You can roam around the Cruise and Deck to see a nice view of the night sea.
3.Beetle: Ferry
It is also a tiny ferry, but it takes longer than KOBBE. KOBBE floats water by shooting water on the surface of the sea but Beetle is just ferry. So it might cause you Seasickness.
